Spanish tenor Mikeldi Atxalandabaso makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2014/15 Season, singing Ruodi (Guillaume Tell).
Atxalandabaso was born in Bilbao and studied there. He made his professional debut in 2007 and sings regularly in Spain, with engagements including Maese Pedro (El retablo de Maese Pedro) for Teatro Real, Madrid, and Liceu, Barcelona, Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) in La Coruña, Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte) and Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) for Oviedo Opera, Bruno (I puritani) and Bois-Rosé (Les Huguenots) for Teatro Real, Bardolph (Falstaff), Brighella (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Monsieur Triquet (Eugene Onegin) for Bilbao Opera, Goro (Madama Butterfly) in Seville and numerous zarzuela roles.
Atxalandabaso's many performances of Ruodi, in both the French and Italian versions, have included for Dutch National Opera and Opéra de Monte-Carlo, under Gianandrea Noseda for Teatro Regio, Turin, in concert at the Edinburgh International Festival and on tour of the USA and Canada, under Gianluigi Gelmetti in concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées for Opéra de Monte-Carlo and in La Coruña. Other international engagements include Beppe (Pagliacci) for Théâtre du Capitole, Toulouse, Maese Pedro at La Monnaie, Brussels, and Tony (West Side Story) in concert under Vasily Petrenko.
