Danish designer Mia Stensgaard made her Royal Opera debut in 2013 as set designer on Eugene Onegin, directed by Kasper Holten. She has since returned to design the sets of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, also directed by Holten.
Stensgaard studied costume and set design at the National Theatre School, Copenhagen. She works as a designer for opera, theatre and ballet. Her other work with Holten includes set designs for Cavalleria rusticana (Norwegian National Opera) and Idomeneo (Vienna State Opera) and costume designs for Tannhäuser (Royal Danish Opera, Copenhagen). Further opera credits include Pagliacci (Norwegian National Opera), Rienzi (Latvian National Opera), Die Fledermaus (Opéra de Lyon, Royal Danish Opera), El Cimarrón (Royal Danish Opera and Oslo) and Maria de Buenos Aires (Royal Danish Opera). She has designed sets and costumes for major Danish theatres including Bellevue Theatre, Betty Nansen Theatre and Royal Danish Theatre. Her ballet work includes on Manon and A Folktale (sets and costumes) and Requiem (costumes) for Royal Danish Ballet and costumes for Don Giovanni for Dutch National Ballet.
Stensgaard has also worked as a production designer for film and television, including for ‘The Legacy’ and the films Men and Chicken, Someone You Love, Adam’s Apples, Accused and The Green Butchers. She has also illustrated several books.
