Biography

English bass-baritone Matthew Stiff makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as First Nazarene (Salome).

Stiff studied music at the University of Huddersfield and voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has received scholarships from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, Maidment Scholarship administered by the Musicians Benevolent Fund and Wingate Scholarship Foundation. Opera engagements include Colline (La bohème), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Sacristan (Tosca) and Pietro (L’assedio di Calais) for English Touring Opera, Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Doctor Grenvil (La traviata), Hobson (Peter Grimes), Lord Walton (I puritani) and Marquis de la Force (Dialogues des Carmélites) for Grange Park Opera, Man (Last One Out) for Scottish Opera, Writer (Four White Walls) for Opera North, Polyphemus (Acis and Galatea) for Mid Wales Opera, Kecal (The Bartered Bride), Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) and Charon (Euridice) for British Youth Opera, Ashby (La fanciulla del West) and Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore) for OperaUpClose and King Balthazar (Amahl and the Night Visitors) for Iford Arts.

His performances in concert include Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at St Paul’s Hall and The Armed Man at St Albans Cathedral.
