Mark S. Doss

Biography

Based in North America, Mark S. Doss made his Royal Opera debut in 2003 singing Amonasro (Aida). He returned in the 2017/18 Season to sing Alfio (Cavalliera rusticana).

Doss’s awards include First Prize in the International Verdi Competition, Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions and the National Institute for Music Theatre’s George London Opera Prize. He has performed the Dutchman (Der fliegende Holländer) for Teatro Regio, Turin and Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Further principal roles include Escamillo (Carmen) at the Arena di Verona, Amonasro at La Scala, Milan, and in Vienna, Jokanaan (Salome) at the Berlin State Opera and in São Paulo, Simone (Eine florentinische Tragödie) in Turin, the four villains (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) for New National Theatre, Tokyo, Macbeth for Dorset Opera, Méphistophélès (Faust) in Oviedo and Santa Fe, and Alfio in Seville and for Hawaii Opera Theater. Role creations include Colonial Soldier (Nicholas Lens’s Shell Shock) for La Monnaie, Brussels.

In concert he has sung with the major orchestras of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago and Toronto. His discography includes a Grammy Award-winning recording of Handel’s Semele.
