Biography

American bass-baritone Mark S. Doss made his Royal Opera debut in 2003 singing Amonasro (Aida). He returns in the 2017/18 Season to sing Alfio (Cavalliera rusticana).

Doss was born in Cleveland. His awards include Planet Africa’s Entertainment Award, the International Verdi Competition and the George London Opera Prize. He has performed the Dutchman (Der fliegende Holländer) for Teatro Regio, Turin, Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Dorset Opera. Further lead roles include Escamillo (Carmen) in Turin, Amonasro in Turin, San Diego and for Dorset Opera, Jokanaan (Salome) in São Paulo and Mallorca, Simone (Eine florentinische Tragödie) in Turin, the four villains (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) for New National Theatre, Tokyo, Cadmus (The Bassarids) for Rome Opera, Méphistophélès (Faust) in Oviedo and for Dorset Opera and Alfio in Seville. In concert he has sung with the major orchestras of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago and Toronto. His discography includes a Grammy Award-winning recording of Handel’s Semele.
