Swedish soprano Maria Bengtsson made her Royal Opera debut in 2009 as Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi). She has since sung Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte) and the Countess (Le nozze di Figaro) for The Royal Opera.
Bengtsson grew up in Höllviken in a family of musicians. She took piano lessons and sang in choirs from a young age, and went on to study at the University of Music in Freiburg. Upon graduating, she became a member of the Vienna Volksoper and, two years later, the Komische Oper Berlin, where she remained until 2007. She has appeared in opera houses across Europe and collaborated with conductors including Antonio Pappano, Daniel Barenboim, Vasily Petrenko and Vladimir Jurowski. Her repertory includes many Mozart soprano roles, Strauss’s Daphne, Cunégonde (Candide) and Monteverdi’s Poppea. She also gives regular concerts and recitals, including performances at the Carinthian Summer Festival and at the Vienna Concert Hall and Musikverein.
Bengtsson's recordings include Beethoven’s Egmont op.84 with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. In film, she sang Donna Anna in Juan, Kasper Holten's internationally-released film based on Don Giovanni.
