German director and video director Manuel Braun makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2019/20 Season as video designer for Fidelio.
Braun trained as a video editor and camera assistant, and began his career working as a video designer and assistant director at the Munich Volkstheater, where he designed video for Macbeth and Löhle’s Lilly Link, and assisted on plays including works by Shakespeare, Goethe, Marivaux, Büchner, Wedekind and Brecht. He has been video designer for Tobias Kratzer’s productions of Tannhäuser (Bayreuth Festival), La forza del destino (Frankfurt Opera), Bastien und Bastienne/Eine florentinische Tragödie (Oper Halle), Le Prophète (Karlsruhe) and Lucio Silla (La Monnaie, Brussels). Other video designs include Kate Tempest’s Europe is Lost (Prize Video of the Year, Association Silhouette Paris), the documentary project Koranschule at Mannheim’s National Theatre and Am falschen Ort (also director), Supermen KA, Der Hermannsschlacht and Jakob der Lügner at Karlsruhe State Theatre.
Braun’s directing credits include a digital staging of Romeo and Juliet, Horváth’s Jugend ohne Gott (Munich Volkstheater) and Ahlsen’s Philemon und Baukis and Schönherr’s Der Weibsteufel (Theater Vagen).
