Maida Hundeling

Biography

German soprano Hundeling makes her Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season as Helmwige (Die Walküre).

Hundeling studied in Vienna. She was a member of the Eisenach Theatre 2001–3, singing roles include Agathe (Der Freischütz), Marta (Tiefland) and Venus and Elisabeth (Tannhäuser). Since then her operatic appearances have included Senta (Der fliegende Holländer) in Dortmund, Lübeck, Ljubljana, Montréal, Wiesbaden, Prague, Braunschweig and Bari, Salome and Leonore (Fidelio) for Edmonton Opera, Tosca, Giorgetta (Il tabarro) and Salome for Vienna Volksoper, Aida, Adriana Lecouvreur, Katharina (The Greek Passion), Tosca, Turandot, Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) and Jenufa for Prague National Theatre, Elektra in Braunschweig, Aida in Mannheim, Leipzig, Brno, Saarbrücken and Schwerin, Elsa (Lohengrin), Turandot, Ariadne (Ariadne auf Naxos), Leonore and Tosca for National Theatre, Bratislava, Turandot for Utah Opera, Ariadne in Nuremburg and Freiburg, Foreign Princess (Rusalka) for Houston Grand Opera, Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes) in Hanover and Wuppertal, Elisabeth in Oldenburg, Marie (Wozzeck) and Turandot in Regensburg, and Jenufa, Desdemona (Otello) and Elsa for the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, Ostrava.

Hundeling sings widely in concert, her repertory including Beethoven’s Symphony no.9, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, Mahler’s Symphony no.8 masses by Dvorák and Janácek and Lieder by Strauss. She is the winner of the 2017 Thália Award.
