Katharina John



German dramaturg Katharina John made her Royal Opera debut in the 2016/17 Season on Così fan tutte, directed by Jan Philipp Gloger, a production revived in the 2018/19 Season.

John was born in Heidelberg and studied German, history and political science in Heidelberg and Kiel. She began her career working in Kiel as an assistant director and since 1995 has worked as a dramaturg for opera, concerts and ballet. She has been Director of the Opera Department for Theater Trier, Director of the Opera Department for Theater Augsburg and Deputy Director of Drama for Deutsche Oper Berlin.?Her opera dramaturgy includes Arabella, Turandot, Otello, Zemslinsky’s Der Traumgörge, Les Troyens, Braunfels’s Jeanne d’Arc, Samson et Dalila, Rienzi and Tiefland (Berlin), Carmen, Rigoletto and Don Giovanni (Augsburg), Tosca, The Excursions of Mr Broucek and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Theater Trier, La bohème in Wiesbaden and Siegfried in Karlsruhe among many others. She has also devised concert and interdisciplinary events including a Zemlinsky symposium (Deutsche Oper Berlin) and a music theatre project based around La bohème, Die Bohème am Kotthusser Tor (Berlin).

John has worked with directors including Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson, Markus Bothe, Sam Brown, Alexander Charim, Lorenzo Fioroni, Jürgen Gosch, Kirsten Harms, Jasmina Hadžiahmetovic, Patrick Kinmonth, Tilman Knabe, Andreas Kriegenburg, Alexander von Pfeil, David Pountney, Christoph Schlingensief, Joachim Schlömer, Roland Schwab and Philipp Stölzl, and the choreographers Marguerite Donlon, Johann Kresnik, Mei Hong Lin, Mario Schröder, Christian Spuck and Stephan Thoss.
