Biography

Bolivian bass José Coca Loza makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2019/20 Season as Lesbo (Agrippina).

Coca Loza was born in 1989. He studied piano and singing in the USA at the University of Arizona. He moved to Basel in 2012 to study at the Academy of Music there and was a member of the Opera Studio OperaAvenir at Theater Basel, where he has sung roles including Melisso (Alcina) and Marquis d’Obigny (La traviata). Other operatic appearances include Haly (L’italiana in Algeri) for Salzburg Festival and on tour in concert to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris, and Opéra Royal de Versailles, Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) for Schlossoper Haldenstein, Alidoro (La Cenerentola) at the Lucerne Festival, Clistene (L’Olimpiade) at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Truffaldino (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Festival de Música de Canarias in Tenerife and Las Palmas. He has sung in concert with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, in a concert with the Menuhin Festival Orchestra Academy in Gstaad and in the Christmas Gala at the Tyrolean Festival, Erl.

In 2017 Coca Loza appeared in the first ‘Stars and Rising Stars’ festival in Munich alongside Cecilia Bartoli, and won prizes in the Migros Kulturprozent and Concorso Renata Tebaldi. He is currently coached by Silvana Bazzoni.
