Biography

American soprano Jennifer Check makes her Royal Opera debut in the 2013/14 Season singing Fifth Maid (Elektra).

Check was born and raised in the USA and is a graduate of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera. In 2013 she made debuts in major Verdi roles, including Lady Macbeth (Macbeth) for Opéra de Nancy, Elisabeth de Valois (Don Carlos) at the Caramoor Music Festival and Leonora (Il trovatore) for Utah Opera. Her other roles have included Iphigénie (Iphigénie en Tauride) in Valencia, Sirin (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya) for Netherlands Opera and Madame Lidoine (Dialogues des Carmélites) in Austin. Her performances in contemporary opera include Almera in Muhly’s Dark Sisters (Gotham Chamber Opera).

For the Metropolitan Opera Check has sung many roles including Marianne Leitmetzerin (Der Rosenkavalier), High Priestess (Aida), Flowermaiden (Parsifal), Nella (Gianni Schicchi) and Liù (Turandot). She has sung in concert throughout the USA, her repertory ranging from Mozart’s Requiem to Mahler’s Symphonies no.2 and no.8 and Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder. Check has won many prizes for her singing, including the Leonie Rysanek Memorial Prize from the George London Foundation and the Zarzuela Prize in Operalia.
