German director Jan Philipp Gloger made his Royal Opera debut in the 2016/17 Season directing an Olivier Award-nominated production of Così fan tutte, revived in the 2018/19 Season.
Gloger was born in Hagen and studied applied theatre studies in Giessen with Heiner Göbbels and directing at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. While a student he assisted Johan Simons at the Munich Kammerspiele, and has also assisted Rimini Protokoll at Deutsches Schauspielhaus, Hamburg. Since 2007 he has worked widely as a theatre director in Germany. Productions include Much Ado about Nothing and plays by Camus and Marivaux for Bavarian State Theatre, Kabale und Liebe and Twelfth Night for Mainz State Theatre, Philipp Löhle’s Das Ding for Deutsches Schauspielhaus, Hamburg, Kasimir und Karoline for Schaubühne Berlin, Elfriede Jelinek’s Das Licht im Kasten for the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf and works for festivals including Heidelberger Stückemarkt, Bayerische Theatertage, Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen and Mülheimer Theatertage. He was Executive Director of Mainz State Theatre 2011–13.
In 2010 he made his opera debut directing Le nozze di Figaro for Theater Augsburg. Opera engagements since include Alcina and Simon Boccanegra for Semperoper Dresden, Der fliegende Holländer for Bayreuth Festival, Faust and Vivaldi’s La verità in cimento for Zürich Opera House, Il barbiere di Siviglia for Aalto-Musiktheater, Essen, La betulia liberata and?Idomeneo for Frankfurt Opera and Der Rosenkavalier for Dutch National Opera.
