Romanian tenor Ioan Hotea made his Royal Opera debut in the 2016/17 Season replacing Roberto Alagna as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) at short notice. He returns in the 2019/20 Season as Ernesto (Don Pasquale).
Hotea grew up in Baia Mare and studied at the Music Academy in Bucharest. Between 2011 and 2013 he was a member of Bucharest’s National Opera. In 2015 he joined the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden as a company member. There he has sung roles including Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Nemorino, Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), Alfredo Germont (La traviata) and Chevalier Des Grieux (Manon). Other appearances include Ernesto for Zürich Opera, Stuttgart State Opera and Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) for Vienna State Opera, Opéra national du Rhin, Greek National Opera, Chorégies d’Orange and in Stuttgart, Elvino (La sonnambula) for Frankfurt Opera, Des Grieux for Greek National Opera, Tebaldo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) for Paris Opéra, Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi) for Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Dorvil (La scala di seta) for Opéra Royal de Wallonie.
Hotea has won many prizes in his native Bucharest and in 2015 won First Prize in Operalia.
