Biography

British lighting designer Howard Hudson makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season designing The Monstrous Child in the Linbury Theatre.

Hudson designs lighting for opera, dance, music theatre and theatre productions throughout the UK. Opera lighting credits include Written on Skin (Opera Philadelphia), Mansfield Park and Il barbiere di Siviglia (Grange Festival), La bohème, Die Fledermaus and Lakmé (Opera Holland Park), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Opera Holland Park, including at Royal Opera House), and Fidelio and Vert Vert (Garsington). He has designed lighting for ballet companies including English National Ballet and Lithuanian National Ballet. Selected theatre credits include Strictly Ballroom and Kenneth Branagh’s Romeo and Juliet, (West End), Little Shop of Horrors and On the Town (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre), In the Heights (King’s Cross Theatre), The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾ (Menier Chocolate Factory and Curve Leicester), Crazy for You, A Little Night Music, Oliver! and The Secret Adversary (Watermill Theatre), The Rivals (Bristol Old Vic, Liverpool Everyman and Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow) and Titanic, Strangers on a Train, Gaslight, Night Must Fall and The Miser (UK tours).

Abroad, Hudson’s credits include The Phantom of the Opera (Operetta Theatre, Bucharest and Folketeateret, Oslo), Educating Rita (English Theatre, Frankfurt), Cornelius (59E59, New York), Titanic (Princess of Wales Theatre, Toronto) and La Cage aux folles (Aarhus Theatre, Denmark).
