Austrian costume designer Heide Kastler made her Royal Opera debut in 2014 on Idomeneo, directed by Martin Kušej.
Kastler was born in Austria and studied at the University of Art in Linz. Since 1990 she has lived in Hamburg, and works as a freelance costume designer with leading directors including Kušej, Christoph Marthaler, Jossie Wieler, Stephan Kimmig, Jürgen Flimm, Joachim Schlömer and Johann Kresnik. Kastler’s many opera productions with Kušej include Don Giovanni (Salzburg Festival), Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Dutch National Opera, Teatro Real, Madrid, and Paris Opéra) and Der fliegende Holländer (Dutch National Opera). Her other opera credits include Salome (La Monnaie, Brussels, and Liceu, Barcelona) and Fidelio (Oper Bern). She was artistic director of costume design in the Schauspielhaus Hamburg for seven years.
Kastler has worked for many of the leading German and Austrian theatre companies and houses, including Munich Residenztheater (where her credits with Kušej include Der Weibsteufel, Das weite Land, In Agonie and Hedda Gabler), Thalia Theater Hamburg, Munich Kammerspiele, Schauspiel Frankfurt and Vienna Burgtheater. Since 2013 she has been professor of costume design at the University of Hannover.
