Gillian Keith

Soprano

Biography

Canadian/British soprano Gillian Keith made her Royal Opera debut as Tytania (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) in the Linbury Studio Theatre in the 2005/6 Season. She reprised this role in the 2007/8 Season, when she made her main stage Royal Opera debut as Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos). In the 2014/15 Season she sang Gloria (Gloria: a Pig’s Tale) in the Linbury Studio Theatre. In the 2017/18 Season she sings Miss Spink/Ghost Child One (Coraline at the Barbican) for The Royal Opera.

Keith studied piano at McGill University, Montréal, and singing at the Royal Academy of Music. She won the 2000 Kathleen Ferrier Award and made her Wigmore Hall recital debut in 2001. She has appeared in opera with companies including English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Dutch National Opera, Opera Basel and at the Buxton and Bregenz festivals, her roles including Poppea (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Lucinda (Conti’s Don Chisciotte), Ginevra (Ariodante), Philline (Mignon), Nannetta (Falstaff), Zerbinetta, Tiny (Paul Bunyan), Tytania and Pretty Polly (Birtwistle’s Punch and Judy).

In concert, Keith has sung at the BBC Proms, and with orchestras and ensembles including Tafelmusik, Florilegium, The Sixteen, the RPO the CBSO and the Toronto Symphony, under conductors including Armstrong, Christophers, Gatti, Gardiner, Elder and Noseda. Her many recordings include solo discs of songs by Debussy and Richard Strauss, Dallapiccola orchestral songs under Noseda, and a disc of Schubert Lieder with bass-baritone Gerald Finley.
