Falk Bauer

Costume designer


German costume designer Falk Bauer created the costumes for Dialogues des Carmélites, directed by Robert Carsen and performed by The Royal Opera in 2014.

Bauer grew up in Stuttgart and began his career as a costume designer working as an assistant to Marianne Glittenberg in Hamburg. He has worked as a freelance costume designer since 1994, for theatres such as Thalia Theater in Hamburg, the Zürich Schauspielhaus and the Akademietheater Wien. Since 1996 he has also designed costumes for opera, his collaborations including Tosca (Netherlands Opera, directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff), Mitridate, re di Ponto (Salzburg Festival, directed by Günter Krämer) and Nabucco (Vienna State Opera). He designed costumes for Carsen’s production of Ariadne auf Naxos (Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Royal Danish Opera) as well as Dialogues des Carmélites, which has been taken into the repertories of companies including Netherlands Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Teatro Real, Madrid, La Scala, Milan, De Vlaamse Opera and Canadian Opera Company.

Further work includes costume designs for Regula Gerber’s production of Mieczysław Weinberg’s The Idiot in Mannheim at its world premiere.
