Falk Bauer

Biography

German costume designer Falk Bauer created the costumes for Robert Carsen's production of Dialogues des Carmélites, which enters The Royal Opera's repertory in the 2013/14 Season.

Bauer grew up in Stuttgart and began his career as a costume designer working as an assistant to Marianne Glittenberg in Hamburg. He has worked as a freelance costume designer since 1994, for theatres such as Thalia Theater in Hamburg, the Zürich Schauspielhaus and the Akademietheater Wien. Since 1996 he has also designed costumes for opera, his collaborations including Tosca (Netherlands Opera with Nikolaus Lehnhoff), Mitridate, re di Ponto (Salzburg Festival, with Günter Krämer) and Nabucco (Vienna State Opera). He designed costumes for Carsen's production of Ariadne auf Naxos (Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Royal Danish Opera) as well as his Dialogues des Carmélites, which has been taken into the repertories of companies including Netherlands Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Teatro Real, Madrid, La Scala, Milan, De Vlaamse Opera and Canadian Opera Company.

Recent work includes costume designs for Regula Gerber's production of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s The Idiot in Mannheim at its world premiere.
