Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura was a Jette Parker Young Artist for The Royal Opera 2008–10, singing roles including Fifth Maid (Elektra), Sandman (Hansel and Gretel), Giulietta (I Capuleti e I Montecchi), Giannetta (L'elisir d'amore), Frasquita (Carmen), Musetta (La bohème), Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro and Sophie (Werther). Since leaving the Programme she has returned to sing Liù (Turandot) and Gilda (Rigoletto) for the Company.
Nakamura first wanted to be a music teacher and studied piano and trombone; it was not until a school performance of Beethoven's Symphony no.9 that she discovered her vocation as a singer. She studied at Osaka College of Music and the Opera Studio at Tokyo New National Theatre, before joining Opera Studio Nederland in the 2006/7 season. She is currently a member of the Bavarian State Opera, which she joined in September 2010 on graduating from the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme. Her roles with the company have included Susanna, Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Gretel, Adina (L'elisir d'amore), Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Giulietta, Xenia (Boris Godunov) and Liù. Nakamura continues to have engagements all over the world with leading theatres and orchestras such as Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Washington National Opera, Orchestre National de France and NHK Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Nakamura was a finalist in the 2009 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition and a Song Prize finalist. Her concert performances include Rossini's Stabat Mater under Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Bruckner's Te Deum and a Rosenblatt recital at the Wigmore Hall.
