Russian soprano Elena Pankratova makes her debut with The Royal Opera in the 2013/14 Season, singing Barak’s Wife (Die Frau ohne Schatten). She created the role in the premiere of this production at La Scala, Milan, in 2012.

Pankratova was born in Yekaterinburg and studied conducting and piano there, and singing and drama at the St Petersburg State Conservatory. She went on to further study with Renata Scotto, and won several international competitions in Italy and Spain. She made her professional debut at the Nuremberg State Theatre as Amelia (Un ballo in maschera). She now sings at opera houses throughout Europe, and works with conductors including Julia Jones, Luisotti, Nagano and Soltesz, and with directors including Albery, Curran, Guth and Herheim. Her recent roles include Barak’s Wife for the Maggio Musicale, Florence, La Scala, Milan, Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires and Bavarian State Opera, Senta (Der fliegende Holländer) in Frankfurt, Tosca for Norwegian National Opera, Turandot in Bonn, Bologna and Florence, Odabella (Attila) for La Scala, Abigaille (Nabucco) in Mexico City, Munich and Palermo, and Aida in Marseilles.

Pankratova is married to the singing teacher Vitaly Zapryagaev, with whom she travels around the world giving masterclasses and workshops in vocal technique and interpretation of Italian, German and Slavic repertory.
