Biography

Austrian tenor Dietmar Kerschbaum makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as First Jew (Salome).

Kerschbaum studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, with Walter Berry and Franz Lukasovsky. He sings with companies including Berlin State Opera, Vienna Volksoper, Vienna State Opera, Salzburg Landestheater, Theater an der Wien, Hamburg State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Dutch National Opera, Paris Opéra, Oviedo Opera, Opéra national du Rhin, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Rome Opera, La Monnaie, Brussels, and Salzburg Festival. His repertory spans more than eighty roles, including Pedrillo (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), David and Kunz Vogelgesang (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Sailor/Shepherd (Tristan und Isolde), Vašek (The Bartered Bride), Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier), Dancing Master (Ariadne auf Naxos), Gabriel von Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Count Danilo Danilowitsch (Die lustige Witwe), Captain (Wozzeck), Prince/Manservant/Marquis (Lulu) and Fatty (Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny).

Kerschbaum’s concert appearances include performances at Avery Fisher Hall, New York (including Bach’s St Matthew Passion with Kurt Masur), Suntory Hall, Tokyo, Gulbenkian Hall, Lisbon, Vienna Konzerthaus and Vienna Musikverein (including Janácek’s The Diary of One Who Disappeared and Zemlinsky’s Eine florentinische Tragödie). He runs the festival JOPERA Jennersdorf Festivalsommer, where he has directed productions including Die Entführung aus dem Serail and sung roles including Max (Der Freischütz).
