French video designer Denis Guéguin makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season on From the House of the Dead.
Guéguin grew up in Paris and studied film and theatre design at the Sorbonne. Since 2003 he has worked regularly with Krzyzstof Warlikowski, credits including Die Gezeichneten and Die Frau ohne Schatten (Bavarian State Opera), Lulu and Don Giovanni (La Monnaie, Brussels), Parsifal (Paris Opéra), The Rake’s Progress (Berlin State Opera) and Wozzeck (Dutch National Opera and Polish National Opera). Theatre credits with Warlikowski include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (National Theatre of Nice), Macbeth (Hannover State Theatre), Madame de Sade (Toneelgroep Amsterdam) and Koniec and A Streetcar Named Desire (Nowy Teatr, Warsaw).
Guéguin wrote and filmed La Bonne Fessée, a film comedy for which he won a Canal+ prize for short film. He has also created experimental films –?including Souvenir l’oeil, Principes physiques de la chute, Orfeo porno, Max, portrait d’un octogénaire en jeune chien, Miroirs obscurs and Visibilité des anges et des abîmes – for presentation at various arts festivals. He has created video designs for avant-garde theatre works including Robert Pinget’s L’Hypothèse (Théâtre de la Cité internationale) and Clyde Chabot’s Copi, un Portrait (Théâtre National de Rennes).
