Biography

British mezzo-soprano Carole Wilson made her Royal Opera debut in the 2001/2 Season as Mayor’s Wife (Jenufa). She has returned to sing Aksinya (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Háta (The Bartered Bride), Governess (The Queen of Spades) and Marthe Schwertlein (Faust) for the Company. In the 2018/19 Season she reprises the role of Marthe Schwertlein.

Wilson has sung regularly for Vienna State Opera, where her roles have included Herodias (Salome) Mary (Der fliegende Holländer), Gertrude (Roméo et Juliette), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier), Adelaide (Arabella), and Berta (Il barbiere di Siviglia). She is also a frequent guest artist for La Monnaie, Brussels, where appearances include Mrs Lovett (Sweeney Todd), Ježibaba (Rusalka), Annina (La traviata), Mother Goose (The Rake’s Progress), Gertrude and Grandmother Buryja (Jenufa).

Other appearances include Annina (Der Rosenkavalier) at Dutch National Opera, for Baden Baden, Hong Kong Philharmonic and Deutsche Oper am Rhein; Aksinya for La Scala, Milan, Bavarian State Opera, Dutch National Opera, Teatro Real, Madrid, Opéra National de Paris, Teatro San Carlo, Naples and Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Auntie (Peter Grimes) for Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Grand Théâtre de Genève and Deutsche Oper am Rhein; Mrs Sedley (Peter Grimes) for Opera Vlaanderen and Opera Oviedo; Fata Morgana (Love for the Three Oranges) for Stuttgart Opera; Old Lady (Candide) for Opera Vlaanderen; Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera) for English National Opera; Witch (Hänsel und Gretel) for the Opéra National de Lorraine; Mother Goose (The Rake’s Progress) for Theater an der Wien; Dame Ragonde (Le Comte Ory) for Oper Klosterneuberg and Bobylikha (Snegurotchka) for Paris Opéra.
