American tenor Bryan Hymel made his Royal Opera debut in 2010 as Don José (Carmen) and has since sung Prince (Rusalka), Aeneas (Les Troyens), the title role of Robert le diable, Henri (Les Vêpres siciliennes), the title role in Don Carlo, Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana) and Canio (Pagliacci) for the Company. In the 2018/19 Season he returns as Don José.

Hymel grew up in New Orleans and studied at the Academy of Vocal Arts, Philadelphia. His notable appearances away from London include Aeneas, Arnold (Guillaume Tell), Rodolfo (La bohème), Roméo (Roméo et Juliette) and Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Henri, Arnold and Don José for Bavarian State Opera, Pinkerton for La Scala, Milan, Don José, Raoul (Les Huguenots), Alfredo Germont (La traviata), Faust (La Damnation de Faust) and Aeneas for Paris Opéra, Percy (Anna Bolena) for Lyric Opera of Chicago, Rodolfo for Dallas Opera, Aeneas for San Francisco Opera and Duke of Mantua for Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Alongside his opera performances, Hymel enjoys recital work and regularly performs in concert. He is the recipient of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2013 Beverly Sills Award and was named Newcomer of the Year (Singer) at the 2015 ECHO Klassik Awards. In 2013 he was awarded the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for his performances as Prince, Aeneas and Robert with The Royal Opera. He is an exclusive recording artist for Warner Classics, and in 2015 released a disc of French opera arias, Héroïque.
