Biography

Austrian lighting designer Bernd Purkrabek made his Royal Opera debut in the 2016/17 Season on Così fan tutte, directed by Jan Philipp Gloger and returns in the 2018/19 Season for The Queen of Spades.

Purkrabek studied lighting design at the Munich Hochschule für Musik und Theater. He designs lighting for drama , dance and opera productions with directors including Pierre Audi, Johannes Erath, Jan Philipp Gloger, Claus Guth, Florentine Klepper and Christof Loy.

Opera engagements include Don Pasquale and Poliuto (Glyndebourne Festival), Der fliegende Holländer and Simon Boccanegra (Semperoper Dresden), Rigoletto (Vienna State Opera), Maria Stuarda, Peter Grimes, Saul, The Enchantress and Der Prinz von Homburg (Theater an der Wien), Arabella (Salzburg Festival), Alcina (Zürich Opera), Falstaff and Jenufa (Deutsche Oper Berlin), Macbeth (Grand Théâtre de Genéve), Lohengrin (Graz Opera and Norwegian Opera), Salome and Der ferne Klang (Graz), La fanciulla del West (Royal Swedish Opera and Frankfurt Opera), Semiramide, Iolanta and Orfeo (Opéra national de Lorraine), Der Rosenkavalier and Les Vêpres siciliennes (Dutch National Opera), Die Zauberflöte, Armida and Agrippina (Opera Vlaanderen) and Manon Lescaut (Hamburg State Opera).
