Ben Baur

Biography

Set designer Ben Baur made his Royal Opera debut in the 2016/17 Season on Così fan tutte, directed by Jan Philipp Gloger.

Baur studied stage and costume design at the Berlin School of Art and Design. He has worked as a staff director for theatre and opera companies in Berlin, Cologne, Amsterdam and for the Bayreuth Festival. Since 2007 he has worked as a freelance designer in opera and theatre, working with such directors as Anna Bergmann, Rudolf Frey, Gloger, Bastian Kraft, Jim Lucassen, Jetske Mijnssen, Michael von zur Mühlen and Patrick Schlösser, at venues including Maxim Gorki Theatre, Deutsches Theater Berlin, Munich Volkstheater, Saarbrücken State Theatre, Kassel State Theatre, Vienna Burgtheater, Stuttgart Opera, Zürich Opera House and Semperoper Dresden. Opera credits include Le nozze di Figaro (Theater Augsburg), Alcina (Semperoper Dresen), Nabucco (Stuttgart Opera and Welsh National Opera), Faust and Orlando paladino (Zürich Opera), Le Cid and Werther (Saarbrücken State Theatre), Salome (Cologne), Ariodante (Aalto-Musiktheater Essen), Almira (Hamburg State Opera), Der Rosenkavalier (Dutch National Opera), La bohème (Badisches State Theatre) and Orfeo (Opéra national de Lorraine).

Baur also works as a director in opera and theatre, credits including Lucia di Lammermoor, Katya Kabanova and La traviata (Saarbrücken), Il trovatore and Roméo et Juliette (Graz), Dialogues des Carmélites (Gelsenkirchen), Il pirata (St Gallen) and Hofmannsthal’s Elektra (Deutsches Theater, Göttingen), for which he also created set designs.
