Biography

He was the Intendant of the Komische Oper Berlin from 2012–2022 where he directed over thirty productions. Productions elsewhere include at the Salzburg Festival, Glyndebourne Festival, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Bayreuth Festival, Royal Opera House, Bavarian State Opera, Paris Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Opera Australia, Los Angeles Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Rome Opera, Berliner Ensemble and Zurich Opera. He has been Artistic Director of Gilgul Theatre Company, Artistic Director of 1996 Adelaide Festival and Co-Director of Vienna Schauspielhaus (2001–5). His many awards include an Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production for Castor et Pollux (ENO), Best Director at the 2014 International Opera Awards, Best Opera House (Komische Oper Berlin) at the 2015 International Opera Awards and a 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Opera and Music Theatre for Saul (also nominated for a 2016 International Opera Award and winner of six Helpmann Awards). In 2016 he was named Director of the Year by Opernwelt and in 2018 Opernwelt named his production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Production of the Year.
