Ashley Holland

Biography

Ashley Holland sings the Spirit Messenger (Die Frau ohne Schatten) with The Royal Opera in the 2013/14 Season. He has previously sung Panthus (Les Troyens) and Masetto (Don Giovanni) for The Royal Opera.

Holland studied at the Royal Northern College of Music. He represented England in the 1995 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition and won the Competizione dell'Opera at Hamburg State Opera in 1988. He was a principal baritone at the English National Opera, during which time he performed roles including Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Ford (Falstaff) and Sharpless (Madama Butterfly). Holland now appears at major opera houses worldwide. Since 2008 his performances have included Ford (Falstaff) and Marcello (La bohème) for Semperoper Dresden, Wolfram (Tannhäuser) for Greek National Opera, Enrico Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor) for Lyric Opera of Chicago, the title role in Glanert’s Caligula and Jack Rance (La fanciulla del West) in Frankfurt, Dr Schön (Lulu) for Welsh National Opera, Mr Flint (Billy Budd) in Düsseldorf and Count (Capriccio) in Cologne and for the Edinburgh Festival. He has worked with conductors including Elder, Davis, Nagano and Pappano, and with directors including Erath, Alden and McVicar.

Holland sings regularly in concert and has performed with orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lille, London Symphony Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra. In 2013 he sang Biterolf (Tannhäuser) at the BBC Proms.
