Alwyn Mellor

Soprano

Biography

British soprano Alwyn Mellor made her Royal Opera debut in the 2012/13 Season as Gerhilde (Die Walküre), a role she reprises in the 2018/19 Season.

Mellor was born in Lancashire. She studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and began her career at Welsh National Opera, initially in lyric soprano repertory, later moving onto more dramatic roles including Tosca and Senta (Der fliegende Holländer). She has sung Brünnhilde (Der Ring des Nibelungen) for Seattle Opera, Brünnhilde (Die Walküre and Siegfried) for Paris Opéra and Longborough Festival Opera, Brünnhilde (Siegfried) for Leipzig Opera and the Boston and Bergen Philharmonic orchestras and Brünnhilde (Götterdämmerung) for Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Opera North. Other Wagner performances include Sieglinde (Die Walküre) for Opera North, Isolde (Tristan und Isolde) for Grange Park Opera, Opéra national de Bordeaux and Washington National Opera and Senta for Opera North and Florentine Opera Company. Other appearances include Tosca for Opéra de Limoges, Minnie (La fanciulla del West) and Chrysothemis (Elektra) for Opera North, Ariadne (Ariadne auf Naxos) for Opera Ireland and Chrysothemis for Canadian Opera Company.

In concert, Mellor has sung with most of the UK’s major orchestras, and in Europe with orchestras including the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, MDR Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orquesta Simfonica de Barcelona and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, working with many of today’s leading conductors. Her recordings include Tove in Gurre-Lieder with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner and Brünnhilde with Seattle Opera.
