Biography

Spanish director Àlex Ollé, one of the six artistic directors of La Fura dels Baus, made his Royal Opera debut in 2016 with Oedipe, co-directed with Valentina Carrasco and originally created for La Monnaie, Brussels. In the 2016/17 Season he directed a new production of Norma for The Royal Opera.

Ollé began his career working with fellow director Carlus Padrissa (also of La Fura dels Baus) on projects including Atlántida (Granada), Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien (Rome Opera), Die Zauberflöte (Paris Opéra and Teatro Real Madrid), Don Quijote en Barcelona (Liceu, Barcelona) and La Damnation de Faust (Salzburg Festival). Other productions with Padrissa include Duke Bluebeard’s Castle/The Diary of One Who Disappeared (Paris, Barcelona, Tokyo, Kobe), Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (Teatro Real, Madrid) and Aida (Arena di Verona). His work with Carrasco includes Le Grand Macabre (English National Opera, Liceu, La Monnaie, Rome Opera). Other opera credits include Il trovatore (Dutch National Opera and Paris Opéra), Francesconi’s Quartett (La Scala, Milan, and Vienna Festwochen, Abbiati Award), Tristan und Isolde, Il prigioniero/Erwartung and Der fliegende Holländer (Opéra de Lyon and Teatro Real), Un ballo in maschera (Opera Australia, Helpmann Award, and La Monnaie, Buenos Aires and Oslo), Madama Butterfly (Handa Opera, Rome Opera), Faust (Dutch National Opera and Madrid) and Pelléas et Mélisande (Dresden).

Ollé’s theatre work includes F@ust 3.0 and XXX with Padrissa, an adaptation of Kafka’s Metamorphosis, a reworking of Boris Godunov and Beckett’s First Love for Chekhov International Theatre Festival, Moscow, and Grec Theatre Festival, Barcelona. He was co-designer with Padrissa of the Opening Ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, and has worked on many large-scale shows. He co-directed the award-winning film Fausto 5.0 (2001).
