American dancer and director Alan Barnes made his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as the Associate Director for Carmen. He returns in the 2018/19 Season as the Revival Director for Carmen.
Barnes studied dance and has performed as a dancer with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, the Dance Theater of Harlem in New York and as a principal dancer with Frankfurt Ballet under the direction of William Forsythe. He assisted in the development of some of Forsythe’s major work. He has won many awards for his work as a dancer, and is a regular choreographer at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center and for the emerging Francesca Harper Project. His work as a dancer and choreographer is interdisciplinary and often involves other artists and companies. He has worked as an associate director, director and choreographer for companies and opera houses including Semperoper Dresden, Dutch National Ballet, the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, the Koninklijk Ballet van Vlaanderen in Antwerp, Ballet Zürich, Frankfurt Opera and Berlin’s Friedrichsstadtpalast.
Barnes has collaborated with fashion designer Bernhard Wilhelm and on projects for fashion houses including Costume National, Issey Miyake, Versace and Marithé et François Girbaud, as well as for rock legends The Rolling Stones.
