American tenor Matthew Polenzani made his Royal Opera debut in 2007 as Ferrando (Così fan tutte) and has since sung Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) and Chevalier Des Grieux (Manon, in Covent Garden and on The Royal Opera's Japan tour) for The Royal Opera. In the 2014/15 Season he returns to sing the title role in Idomeneo.

Polenzani is the recipient of many prestigious awards including the 2008 Beverly Sills Award and a 2004 Richard Tucker Award. He appears regularly for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in roles including Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Leicester (Maria Stuarda), Alfredo Germont (La traviata), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Don Ottavio, Ferrando, the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), Roméo (Roméo et Juliette) and Werther. He sings regularly for leading European opera houses including the Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and La Scala, Milan, and for American companies including Lyric Opera of Chicago. His repertory also includes Tebaldo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) and the title roles in La clemenza di Tito, La Damnation de Faust and Les Contes d’Hoffmann.

Polenzani performs regularly in concert with leading US and European orchestras. His recital appearances have included Janáček’s The Diary of One Who Disappeared (Carnegie Hall Zankel Hall) and a Schubert Liederabend (Carnegie Hall Isaac Stern Auditorium). In his spare time he is an avid golfer.
