Italian tenor Marco Berti made his Royal Opera debut in 2002 as Gabriele Adorno (Simon Boccanegra). He has since sung Lieutenant F.B. Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Manrico (Il trovatore), Don José (Carmen) and Calaf (Turandot) for The Royal Opera.
Berti was born in Como and studied at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi, Milan. In 1990 he made his professional debut as Pinkerton in Cosenza. His debut at La Scala, Milan, followed shortly after, as Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor). He currently performs regularly for such opera houses and companies as La Scala, Metropolitan Opera, New York, Paris Opéra, Arena di Verona, Liceu, Barcelona, Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera and in Beijing and Tokyo.
Berti’s other roles include Ernani, Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera), Radames (Aida), Otello, Edgar, Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut) and Cavaradossi (Tosca). In 2005 he was awarded the Giuseppe Verdi Gold Medal.
