Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja sings the title role in Faust for The Royal Opera in the 2013/14 Season. Calleja made his Royal Opera debut in 2002 as the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), and has since sung Alfredo (La traviata), Macduff (Macbeth), Nicias (Thaïs in concert), Gabriele Adorno (Simon Boccanegra) and Rodolfo (La bohème) for The Royal Opera, and appeared in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Winners concert.

Calleja grew up in Malta and began singing at the age of 16. He studied with Paul Asciak and made his operatic debut at the age of 19 in Gozo as Macduff. He won the 1998 Caruso Competition in Milan and was a prize-winner in Operalia (1999). He appears regularly at many of the leading opera houses in Europe and the USA. For the Metropolitan Opera, New York, his roles have included Hoffmann (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Duke of Mantua, Rodolfo and Faust. For Vienna State Opera he has sung Elvino (La sonnambula), Arturo (I puritani), Duke of Mantua, Alfredo, Roberto Devereux, Rodolfo, Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) and Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly).

Calleja has performed in large-scale outdoor concerts in Paris, Munich and Malta, was the featured soloist at the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Stockholm, and has toured Germany in concert with Anna Netrebko. In 2012 he co-headed the Last Night of the BBC Proms in London. His recordings include four solo albums, including the recent Amore, and DVDs of Simon Boccanegra and La traviata with The Royal Opera.
