Hungarian conductor Henrik Nánási made his Royal Opera House debut in 2013 conducting Turandot and has since returned to conduct Il barbiere di Siviglia.
Nánási was born in Pécs and studied piano, composition and conducting at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. After initial engagements at Stadttheater Klagenfurt and Theater Augsburg he became First Kapellmeister at Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Munich, in 2007. Since September 2012 he has been General Music Director of Komische Oper Berlin, where he has conducted new productions of Eugene Onegin, Mazepa, Gianni Schicchi, Die Zauberflöte, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, La Belle Hélène, Bluebeard’s Castle, The Fiery Angel and Cendrillon, as well as Der Rosenkavalier, Rigoletto and Rusalka.
Nánási has conducted opera internationally for companies including Bavarian State Opera (La traviata), Arena di Verona (Carmen), Zürich Opera House (Le nozze di Figaro), Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, Valencia (Bluebeard’s Castle, Macbeth), Lyric Opera of Chicago (Le nozze di Figaro), Liceu, Barcelona (Die Zauberflöte), Hamburg State Opera (Otello, Lucia di Lammermoor, La traviata), Frankfurt Opera (La bohème, I masnadieri, L’Etoile, La gazza ladra) and Dresden Semperoper (L’italiana in Algeri, La bohème, Madama Butterfly, La traviata, La Cenerentola). He has worked with orchestras including Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bruckner Orchester Linz, Essener Philharmoniker, Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, Orchestra of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra del Teatro di San Carlo and Orchestra of Teatro Massimo di Palermo.
