Polish contralto Ewa Podleś made her Royal Opera debut in 1990 as Hedwige (Guillaume Tell) and has since sung Madame de la Haltière (Cendrillon) and La Marquise de Berkenfeld (La Fille du régiment) with The Royal Opera.

Podleś was born in Warsaw and studied at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. She made her stage debut as Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia) in 1975 and has since performed for leading companies worldwide, including La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Liceu, Barcelona, and Teatro Real, Madrid, in roles ranging from the title role in Rinaldo to Klytämnestra (Elektra). She is particularly renowned for her performances in Rossini roles and Baroque opera. In recital she has appeared at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall.

Podleś has made numerous recordings and received many awards and accolades, including the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland’s highest orders.
