British mezzo-soprano Diana Montague made her Royal Opera debut in 1979 as Tebaldo (Don Carlo), returning the same year to sing Third Flowermaiden (Parsifal). She has since sung roles including Nicklausse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Annio (La clemenza di Tito), Fox (The Cunning Little Vixen), Wellgunde (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Meg Page (Falstaff), Háta (The Bartered Bride), Magdalene (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro), Madame Larina (Eugene Onegin), Gertrude (Roméo et Juliette) and Marthe Schwertlein (Faust) for The Royal Opera.
Montague was born in Winchester and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music. She made her professional debut as Zerlina (Don Giovanni) with Glyndebourne on Tour in 1977 and has since sung for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and the Bayreuth, Glyndebourne and Salzburg festivals, among others. Her repertory includes all the major mezzo-soprano Mozart roles and Iphigénie (Iphigénie en Tauride), Isolier (Le Comte Ory), Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Marguerite (La Damnation de Faust), Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) and the Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos). Further engagements include Storge (Jephtha) for Welsh National Opera, Carmela (I gioielli della Madonna) for Opera Holland Park, La Haine (Armide) for De Nederlandse Opera and Mother (Hänsel und Gretel) for Théâtre du Capitole, Toulouse.
Montague has sung in concert with leading conductors, in such repertory as Mozart’s C Minor Mass and Ravel’s Shéhérazade, and recorded prolifically for major record labels.
