German soprano Diana Damrau made her Royal Opera debut in 2003 as Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte). She has since sung Fiakermilli (Arabella), Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), Adina (L’elisir d’amore) and Violetta (La traviata) for The Royal Opera, and created the role of Gym Instructress/Drunken Woman in Maazel's 1984.

Damrau was born in Günzburg and studied in Würzburg and Salzburg. She made her professional debut as Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro) at the Würzburg State Theatre and subsequently became a member of the ensemble there. She has since performed at the world’s leading opera houses including La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Paris Opéra, Bavarian State Opera and Vienna State Opera. Her current repertory includes Gilda (Rigoletto), Violetta, Amina (La sonnambula), Moll Hackabout (Bell’s A Harlot’s Progress), the four heroines (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Philine (Mignon), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) and Lucia di Lammermoor. Damrau is a renowned concert performer and has appeared in venues including Berlin’s Philharmonie, Vienna’s Musikverein, the Wigmore Hall and the Carnegie Hall, with such conductors as Colin Davis, James Levine, Lorin Maazel and Zubin Mehta. She appears regularly with harpist Xavier de Maistre.

Damrau's wide discography includes numerous DVDs ranging from Le Comte Ory to Rigoletto and five solo albums. She was named as 2008 Opernwelt Singer of the Year and is a Kammersängerin of the Bavarian State Opera. She is involved with many charitable causes and has given benefit concerts for the Fascination Regenwald Foundation and for Frankfurt’s Städel Museum.
