Craig Smith

Baritone

Biography

British baritone Craig Smith made his Royal Opera debut in 2015 as Gaoler (Dialogues des Carmélites).

Smith grew up in Bolton. He studied chemistry at Manchester University and worked as a chemistry teacher before studying singing at the Royal Northern College of Music. He is a former member of Zürich Opera, where he sang many supporting roles. Engagements elsewhere include Rigoletto on tour in Japan, Spencer Coyle (Owen Wingrave) for Wiener Kammeroper, Michonnet (Adriana Lecouvreur) for Chelsea Opera Group, Nabucco for Bucharest State Opera, Amonasro (Aida) on tour in Belgium, the four villains (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) in Baden-Baden, Giorgio Germont (La traviata) for Garden Opera and the St Margarethen Opera Festival, Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) and Ford (Falstaff) for Longborough Festival, Lockit (The Beggar’s Opera) for Opera Project, Second Commissary (Dialogues des Carmélites) for Theater an der Wien and Simon Boccanegra for English Touring Opera.

Smith also sings in oratorio throughout the UK, in repertory including Elijah, Messiah and The Dream of Gerontius. He has sung with orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the BBC Philharmonic.
