Soprano Ana James sings Fifth Flowermaiden (Parsifal) and Voice of Unborn Child (Die Frau ohne Schatten) with The Royal Opera in the 2013/14 Season. She was a Jette Parker Young Artist with The Royal Opera 2005–7, during which time her roles included Elisa (Il re pastore), Serpina (La serva padrona, Meet the Young Artists Week) and Frasquita (Carmen). She returned to the Royal Opera House in December 2007 to sing Fifth Flowermaiden.
James was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. She trained at the Manhattan School of Music and at the Royal College of Music’s Benjamin Britten International Opera School, and was the inaugural recipient of the Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation Scholarship. Since leaving the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, James has sung roles including Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) at Glyndebourne Festival and Opera Holland Park, Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) for Glyndebourne on Tour, Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring) for Théâtre du Capitole, Toulouse, Adele (Die Fledermaus) for London Lyric Opera, Gretel (Hansel and Gretel) for New Zealand Opera, Musetta (La bohème) for Puccini Festival tour in Abu Dhabi and Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) for Iford Arts and Rio de Janeiro.
James also performs regularly in concert, and has appeared at the Wigmore Hall with the Classical Opera Company and at the 2013 BBC Proms in Parsifal.
