Ukrainian bass Alexander Tsymbalyuk makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2013/14 Season as the Commendatore (Don Giovanni). He has previously sung the role for Hamburg State Opera, in Valencia, for Berlin State Opera and on tour with the Bolshoi, Moscow.

Tsymbalyuk studied at the Odessa Conservatory, graduating in 2003. He is currently a member of Hamburg State Opera, where his roles have included Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Hunding (Die Walküre), Fafner and Hunding (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Méphistophélès (Faust), Colline (La bohème) and Timur (Turandot). In the 2010/11 season he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, as Ferrando (Il trovatore), and in the same season made his debut at La Scala, Milan, as Don Basilio. Other notable appearances include his role debut for Bavarian State Opera as Boris Godunov, Monk (Don Carlo) for the Maggio Musicale, Florence, Sparafucile (Rigoletto) at the Hollywood Bowl and Timur for Royal Danish Opera and in Valencia.

Tsymbalyuk has worked with conductors including Barenboim, Mehta, Muti, Pappano and Young. He has won prizes in many international competitions, including in the 13th International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow, 2007).
