Ukrainian bass Alexander Tsymbalyuk made his Royal Opera debut in 2014 as the Commendatore (Don Giovanni) and has since returned to sing Sparafucile (Rigoletto).

Tsymbalyuk studied at the Odessa Conservatory, graduating in 2003. He is a former member of Hamburg State Opera, where his roles have included the Commendatore, Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Fafner and Hunding (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Méphistophélès (Faust), Colline (La bohème) and Timur (Turandot). Engagements elsewhere include Ferrando (Il trovatore) for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Fafner, Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and King of Egypt (Aida) for La Scala, Milan, Boris Godunov for Bavarian State Opera and the Bolshoi Theatre, the Commendatore for Berlin State Opera, in Valencia and on tour with the Bolshoi, Bedyay (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya) for Liceu, Barcelona, Monk (Don Carlo) for the Maggio Musicale, Florence, Sparafucile (Rigoletto) at the Hollywood Bowl and Timur for Royal Danish Opera and in Valencia.

Tsymbalyuk has worked with such conductors as Marco Armiliato, Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano, Antonio Pappano and Simone Young. His many prizes include first prize at the 13th International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow, 2007).
