Scottish tenor Alasdair Elliott made his Royal Ballet debut in 1991 in Les Noces and his Royal Opera debut the following year as Ruodi (Guillaume Tell). He has since returned regularly to the Royal Opera House, in roles including Bardolph (Falstaff), Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Pong and Emperor Altoum (Turandot), Andres (Wozzeck), Kunz Vogelgesang (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and Don Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro). In the 2015/16 Season he returns to sing Don Curzio.
Elliott studied at the then Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Britten Pears School with Peter Pears and the National Opera Studio. He has sung with companies around the world, including Netherlands Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, New Israeli Opera, La Monnaie, Brussels, the Metropolitan Opera House, New York and at the Glyndebourne Festival. His repertory includes such roles as Goro (Madama Butterfly), Red Whiskers (Billy Budd), Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier) and First Jew (Salome). Elliott is also well known for his interest in contemporary music, performing in the world premieres of Legende at the Concertgebouw and Buller’s The Bacchae for ENO, and creating Shvonder (A Dog’s Heart) for ENO. Other highlights include Vova (Schnittke’s Life with an Idiot) and the Scribe and the Chancellor (Schreker’s Der Schatzgräber).
Elliott’s recording of Bardolph with the London Symphony Orchestra under Colin Davis won a Grammy in 2005. He can also be heard singing Fourth Jew (Salome) for Chandos, Red Whiskers for Virgin Classics, Gamekeeper (Rusalka) for the Glyndebourne Live Label and Kunz Vogelgesang (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) for the Royal Opera Heritage Series under Bernard Haitink.
