This performance was off-the-scale in terms of excellence. I have seen a good few of the Royal Ballet's productions but this one at the cinema blew me away on all counts - the superb dancing, amazing choreography, music and the costumes!!! Congratulations to everyone involved.

  6. Celia responded on 16 October 2014 at 11:26pm Reply

Superb. Marianela and Federico are meant to dance together.

Absolutely stunning performance of Manon. The cinema allows such wonderful close-ups you forget you're not at the theatre. Brilliant performances from Marianella and Federico and also Ricardo and Gary Avis. Also many thanks to the ROH for making it happen and to the cinemas who are showing an encore performance this Sunday (which I will be attending!)

  8. Joanne Simmons responded on 16 October 2014 at 11:41pm Reply

Amazing and moving performance from Nunez and Bonelli - supported by the brilliant Ricardo Cervera, Laura Morera and Christopher Saunders with a particularly evil Gary Avis - beautiful dancing and music!

Blissful ballet at its best. Pas de deux were incredible. No one put a foot wrong. Perfection. My first time viewing at a cinema and it was fantastic. Loved Darcy Bussell's commentary and back stage chat. What a great night out. Thank you ROH.

What an amazing performance. One of the most moving experiences I have ever witnessed. What a privilege to be able to see it on screen. A real democratisation of culture. Thank you ROH and my local cinema (in Grimsby!)

For someone with limited exposure to ballet I was incredibly involved, moved to tears, sold. I feel like I was there in the cinema experience and want more. #ROHManon I will always applaud you.

Desperately disappointed last night when live streaming at Cine World ended at the end of Act I apparently due to technical fault.

Devastated as our only opportunity to see The Royal Ballet in "the provinces"
    Deprived of Dorset

    • Chris Shipman (Head of Brand Engagement and Social Media) responded on 17 October 2014 at 10:02am

      Hi Margie,

Sorry to hear your cinema experienced technical difficulties. Our technical team will follow up with the cinema, but which Cine World was affected?

Just perfect Manon, the best i've seen... Marianela never disappoints, she is perfection! How come when you're announcing your finnest stars, we see, not the name Marianela Núñez, but Lauren Cuthbertson... nothing especial about her or even Sarah Lamb, they do not compare to your brightest star! From a die hard fan of ballet and Marianela.

  18. Mary responded on 17 October 2014 at 10:35am Reply

Just wonderful Marianela has made Manon her own, what a performance. Thank you so much for bringing the arts to the provinces

  19. Annie O'Kane responded on 17 October 2014 at 10:57am Reply

First time I have seen Manon - FABULOUS. The choreography was amazing and danced beautifully. In our little French cinema we had some breaks in transmission but a thunderstorm was around so put it down to that. It did not disturb our enjoyment. Critics should remember that these are LIVE steams going all over the world and inevitably there will be some 'hitches' from time to time.

    • Chris Shipman (Head of Brand Engagement and Social Media) responded on 17 October 2014 at 11:37am

      Hi Annie,

Glad you enjoyed the relay. Breaks in transmission in France were indeed down to the thunderstorm, unfortunately beyond our control.

Hope to have you back (for a hopefully unaffected) cinema relay soon.

Didsbury Cineworld lost transmission for part of the screening but it didn't affect my enjoyment too much and they apologised and gave us complementary tickets for another screening.
Dispite that problem it was a stunning and moving performance. Thank you ROH.

  21. Having not seen Manon before I wasn't sure what to expect, but it just blew me away!!!! From start to end it was totally captivating and each of the Pas De Deux's from Marianela and Federico bought tears to my eyes!! They were STUNNING!! (as were the sets, musicians and costumes!! In fact the costume dept deserve an award in my opinion as they were amazing!! ). I've seen a quite a few ballets but this was quite simply the best ballet I've seen!! Beautifully presented by Darcey (and thanks for reading out my question Darcey) it was a night I shall never forget!! Long may these Live Cinema relays continue!! Thank you Royal Opera House and the Royal Ballet!!!!

Delighted ballet is achieving a wider audience, so why only 2 ballets in the winter programme and only one full length a a selection of 4 short ballets in the spring programme. 5 winter operas and 5 spring operas + concert?

  23. Rod responded on 17 October 2014 at 3:15pm Reply

The whole performance was just stunning - as someone who has been involved in cinema production and exhibition for 20+years this type of content blows those $100m blockbusters out of the window. Sheer brilliance. Must also commend the beautiful Darcy - her obvious excitement at being backstage and part of the event was palpable. Thank you ROH & and RB for the experience of a lifetime

  24. Oh , I just love it !!!!!!!
    Genius choreography !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Amazing , talented cast !!!!!!!
Many thanks to ROH and Royal Ballet, looking forward to see more great ballet and opera performances.

What stunning performances from all the cast .The chemistry between frederico and marianella made for a very special evening.Surely one of the best Manon's ever. Long live the cinema screenings!!
Interested to read of problems at some cinemas. our local showcase(Dudley) said unable to show it at all due to technical problems. Luckily we could get to the Odeon at Merry Hill in time. !!!

  27. Patricia Legge responded on 17 October 2014 at 5:52pm Reply

I cannot express how much I enjoyed this performance of Manon, this is the first time I have seen it, I will certainly want to see it again. Marianella & Frederico were a superb pairing, their chemistry was electric. Thank you so much, this is a wonderful way for those of us who do not live close to London to be able to see some excellent ballet close to home. I am so looking forward to the next showing.

  28. Norma Rothwell responded on 17 October 2014 at 7:40pm Reply

I have to agree with so many of the comments already posted about Manon last night. Marianella Nunez has been a favourite of mine since I first saw her and loved her Kitri last time (have now bought DVD of course) and will do the same for Manon as she was so very good in such a different role, even though Manon is not my favourite ballet.
It is great to be able to see the Royal at the cinema since due to age and arthritis I have NO chance of ever going to London again to see them live. So keep the relays going and the DVD's too please. VERY much appreciated by lifelong ballet fan.

The choreography, the dancers, the orchestra simply beautiful. However, the too long interruptions/interviews + the intermissions spoiled the emotional continuity for me.

  31. J Dunn responded on 17 October 2014 at 9:12pm Reply

It was a magnificent performance - very well directed and filmed. Having been fortunate enough to see many ROH productions over the years at Covent Garden, I am finding your live cinema relays even more rewarding. The close-ups allow for exceptional detailed viewing, but there are enough wider angle shots so as not to lose the effect and colour of the entire stage scene. Darcy Bussell's background information and the interval interviews add another enjoyable element to the whole.
Don't stop: the live screenings are a wonderful opportunity for a wider audience to experience the magic of the ROH.

  32. Lynn B responded on 17 October 2014 at 10:08pm Reply

WOW! absolutely brilliant. Cinema screening allowed you to see so much. The presentation from Darcy was excellent. Such wonderful expression through dance and music. Thank you ROH and RB. Looking forward to Alice.

The whole performance was excellent, however I've been particularly impressed, deeply moved and amazed by the exceptional, outstanding Des Grieux of Federico Bonelli, probably the best dancer today for this character. He is more than a dancer, he is also a convincing and totally engaged actor. Fabulous! The partnership with the excellent Marianela Nunez was excellent also.

Watched Manon in the local cinema. What treat! Nunez and Bonelli were fantastic. The choreography was impeccable. The last act choked me and fw others near by! The cinema experience, my second, was great especially the close ups, could see the facial expressions so well for greater impact. I go agai and again for ROH ballets

We so appreciated being able to enjoy the performance of Manon in the cinema. The cameras and interviews enhanced the experience and the ballet was stunning. Casting was perfection, costumes.... everything. Many thanks to the ROH for sharing in this way.We live in the countryside so this is a good way to experience top quality performances without getting on a plane. Federico and Marianela are divine together! Bravo!

A friend and I have just got home from seeing Manon at the Curzon in Richmond, Surrey, unfortunately there were a few technical problems with the sound and vision at some times, however we thought the entire production was simply wonderful, the dancers - especially the leads - the sets and the costumes bravo to everyone involved. It was so moving we found it difficult to leave my our seats and sat there until the very end feeling absolutely exhausted!!

  38. Denise responded on 19 October 2014 at 6:54pm Reply

    An absolutely stunning production.
Marienala Nunez has got to be one of the most outstanding performers in the history of ballet.
Great chemistry between Federico and Nunez.

My Mum and I have just watched the Encore showing of Manon - it was incredible!!! We didn't know what to expect but I have wanted to see it since reading Darcy Bussells joyful comments about it in her book. Everything about the production was superb but the principal dancers in particular took it to a whole new level that I've never had the privilege of watching before. Thank you!

  42. R Clifford responded on 19 October 2014 at 8:33pm Reply

I watched the encore cinema performance today and thought it mesmerising. Yes Marianela and Federico were fantastic but so were the rest of the dancers especially Laura. Also top marks to the Orchestra. Great!

We watched the brilliant performance of Manon at Richmond Odeon this afternoon. Superb production and breathtaking dancing.
Sadly we missed the final climatic pas de deux as there was a technical fault, the music soared to a blank screen!
However, we have not been put off the cinema experience and have already booked to see Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at the Curzon.

  44. Joan Hopton responded on 19 October 2014 at 11:07pm Reply

Just taken a group of 5 other people to see the Encore performance of Manon today at Preston Odeon cinema and we all agreed it was a sensational ballet; so powerful and emotional. As I've said previously I saw the original live screening as well as seeing it at the ROH but the cinema screening allows you to see so much detail as well as now allowing you to see it again. Several of the people I went with said they would have seen it again if they'd gone to the first screening and we're now organising a visit to Alice.
The only slight problem were several short sound glitches in the first act; just very brief but slightly longer when Bonnelli was starting his first solo. They were righted quickly but I didn't think they would be repeated on Sunday.

  45. Patricia Freeman responded on 20 October 2014 at 10:08am Reply

Having seen live performance on Monday at the ROH with stunning Mathew Golding and Melanie Hamilton I didn't know quite what to expect in the cinema
Difficult to say which I preferred !
Nothing compares to actually being in the opera house but the wonderful close ups do make up up for it
    A remarkable week altogether!
    Well done ROH!

I have seen this Ballet 3 times at Covent garden over the years, now in deepest Dorset and so so disappointed only to see Act l in Weymouth as there was a technical fault - storms in area but what a disappointment. This production was promising to be superb. Disappointing indeed!!!

I thought that the performance of Manon at my local cinema on Sunday Mattinee was really wonderful! The whole production and cast were excellent, including the Corps in all the crowd scenes. I also enjoyed the two interviews with Darcey Bussell, and it was fascinating to hear her account of working with MacMillan, especially in Manon. She evokes a real sense of excitement at being present at the live performance, and is always hugely enjoyable to watch and hear.

My friends and I enjoyed the performance of Manon, in spite it breaking down several times at Cineworld, Haymarket. We had seen it before so new the story. Marianela and Frederico was a perfect partnership with beautiful dancing and interpretation.

  51. Liz Siracusa responded on 30 October 2014 at 9:00pm Reply

This production of 'Manon' was just exquisite, from the technical skill of the performers, to their ability to convey emotional drama to the wonderful musical composition. I was quite astounded at this truly gorgeous performance. And so impressed with the fabulous choreography that was so exquisitely artistic. I just loved this combination of the classical and contemporary, so flawlessly performed by the principal dancers. Cudos to this wonderful Kenneth MacMillan and the Royal Ballet Company, whose performances and performers always manage to present us with the ultimate elegance dance experience.

Marianela Nunez was a pure jewel.

Still having withdrawal symptoms for not seeing it for 4 months. Never seen such a perfect pairing than Bonelli and Nunez. Please stream it again or have the decency to release it for us on DVD. If it helps, prepared to state we had technical difficulties as well, but in fact it didn't spoil the event. You can't wet our appetites like this then leave us in mid air.
