    Incredible production with amazing cast, and what a privilege to be able to exoand the audience to 900+ cinemas. There is no way the cinema broadcast medium 'is ruining live opera' as some would have it. Any modern singer acts (should act) with that degree of detail whether cameras are on or not. If you're able to be in the ROH house, amazing, if you're not, then you still laugh, gasp, cry, feel the whole audience hold its breath, and clap in the cinema! #whosaysoperaisboring #ROHLucia #DianaDamrauisagodess

    Lucia was one of the most exciting operas I've seen in 25 years of opera going. Unbelievably good, there were moments when I simply forgot to breathe. Literally breathtaking! Congratulations Katie Mitchell, who could top that?

    The cast was great. Diana Damrau was super. But I donot admire the choreographie. That Lucia is pregnant is useless. The madscene usualy 15 minutes 100% the scene of Lucia, was disturbed with too many actions on the stage. You need to use your immagination during such a performance. The choreographie tried to explain each action in the opera. A little bit overdone. Remains the super performance of the Diana Damrau, and also a suprise was Charles Castronova as Edgardo.

    It’s past midnight and I’ve just got back home after seeing Lucia at my local cinema in Santander, northern Spain. This is the best production I’ve ever seen of Lucia, and Diana Damrau (what a splendid actress as well as singer!) and Charles Castronovo were fabulous. My congratulations to them both. I think the performance tonight is one of the best I’ve ever seen in over 50 years of opera going.

    An utterly mind blowing and terribly moving production with a wonderful cast Looking forward to seeing the next Katie Mitchell production; every emotion is superbly and subtly motivated. It was also well directed for the cinema which,given the split settings, was no easy task.

    Absolutely stunned by this wonderful production. The sets were magnificent. Diana Damrau was brilliant. So was the peerless Ludovic Tezier. And a special mention to Rachel Lloyd - so good. What on earth was the fuss about? Perfect verismo just as this opera should be. Well done Katie Mitchell

    I relished the heightened sense of melodrama in the "silent" scenes. An individual vision of the imagined back - story. The ghosts made the slide into madness more plausible. The florid passages in vocal lines were given so many shades of dramatic realism. A good example to illustrate how to make the coloratura passages meaningful and not just vocal technique. Thoroughly enjoyed a night at the Opera! Challenged and entertained!

    An interesting concept and superb performances. Does the director not listen to the libretto?
    1 in Act I the urns is supposed to contain the ashes of the dead mother but cremation, especially in Scotland would have been unknown. There is also a reference to Lucia meeting Edgardo some time earlier on her way to visit her mother's grave
    2 setting this in the mid 19th century makes a nonsense of Eduardo's comments regarding the acession of Mary Queen of Scots and the change this brought to the family plus the comment about loosing his head on the block with an axe
    3 In Act 3 the chorus tells us Lucia will be dead by the setting of the sun and yet they are singing this in the evening by moonlight

    What was the point of dressing all the female chorus members as men! Apart from looking ridiculous they would have increased our sympaathy with Lucia as they would have been more aware of the fact that she had just miscarried rather than this being her husband's blood.
    Whilst the ghosts were appropriate did we really need to have one between the parting lovers. The audience had surely got the point by then. In Act 3 Lucia was singing to Edgardo's ghost before he was even dead.

    This seemed a classic example of a director distorting the piece to make a personal point rather than serving the music and libretto

      Fully agree about this production saved only by the magnificent voice of Damrau, the other singers and Donizetti's music, but why all those idiotic "extras"! The ashes?...the WC, the miscarriage...please, do we need to be so over explicit? Inventive at such vulgar level...

    The best Lucia I have ever seen. Breathtaking to the very last second. Everything seemed logic. Wonderful voices and a lover who not only has a beautiful voice bunt is a terrific actor and as an extra even looks good. Seen in Baden-Baden, Germany. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

    Opera was very intense! Screened live tonight at over 900 cinemas across the world. HD resolution on a cinema screen, from multiple cameras. Can't wait to come and see it 'really' live on May 11, though sadly not with Damrau!
    The critics were so wrong! This is a profound and powerful, and daring production of Lucia. Benchmark-setting.

    Magnifique intensité de la tragédie d'un réalisme peut être un peu appuyé,mais un superbe jeu d'acteurs et une Lucia convaincante d'une qualité musicale exceptionnelle.

    Musically fabulous. Sadly disappointed with the direction. It felt too explicit - not the sex, or even the blood, just too... obvious. It took sympathy from Lucia and took me out of the music.

    Seeing the murder on stage, it wasn't a crime of passion or insanity, it was premeditated. The madness only came after the miscarriage, and combined with the overly strong character (which didn't fit with the music or words), it just didn't sit right. Nothing taken from Diana Damrau who acted very well, but I felt more for Alisa (who actually finished him off anyway).

    I also thought the ghosts were a bit overdone. It was like having someone on stage saying "she's seeing ghosts, you know" ... "oh, and she's seeing them again, here"... "and again here"... This trend for more reliance on extra characters occasionally works (Arden's L'Elisir), but usually they are so imbued with heavy-handed symbolism it just alienates me (Guth's Figaro, Michielleto's Guillaume Tell).

    Everyone from Hitchcock to the writers of Doctor Who knows it's what you leave to the imagination that creates the drama. I am fairly intelligent and have a little imagination, so I just felt a bit patronised. Isn't the music enough any more?

    What a star Diana Damrau is . She owns the role, to act and sing with such passion and energy .Well deserved her ovation tonight . Yes critics, it's raw, but this production takes opera to a different level and wider audience . Even a traditionalist (like me) cannot help but be blown away !

    The bloodscenes unnecessarily drawn out. This is a great pity as Diana's passionate performance and fabulous voice are superb. The relentless tragic vulgarity of sex and violence does not do justice to the beauty of this opera.

    It's really a question of what is more important, the Director's vanity or respect for the music, the work and the artists. Gratuitous violence and sensational sex scenes will always appeal to some people but surely there's plenty of scope for them in the commercial cinema? Why a subsidised opera company should pander to the gutter is beyond me. The ROH needs to be braver about maintaining artistic integrity. Here was a ludicrous and tasteless attempt to push an agenda, to create a sensation and earn the Director some cheap notoriety. It's sad that the management should feel forced to attract people into the opera house who value anything above sensitivity, subtlety and artistic impersonality. It's surrendering to the cult of vulgarity.

    Anyone who says DD now "owns" the part (as per a tweet above) has not seen very many people sing this. There are plenty of examples on YouTube etc (Gruberova?) for those who want to learn more.

    Although she is brave and makes an effort to act DD gives the impression of being out of her depth musically, forcing or missing notes on too regular a basis to be considered on top of this repertoire.

    But then, given also the surprisingly positive comments about the production, one must not forget that one point of these cinema relays is to bring wonderful works to those who are new to them. From the few comments that may be working. Sad though, that such a masterpiece should be offered in such a dreary and sometimes barely competent production.

    We, elderly opera fans, saw it last night here in Córdoba, southern Spain, and feel that it couldn`t have been bettered. The "sex" and "violence" was, in the former case, fitting and moving, and the violence was no greater, in fact lesser, than in any gory films you see today. The singing of Damrau was a "tour de force" but the rest were at her level. Congratulations particularly to the director.

    Watched #ROHlucia in Cardiff. Worked for me! @DianaDamrau incredible - what a voice! What acting! Only problem she made most of her male colleagues look wooden (though they had lovely voices). Bravi tutti!

    The second half was HORRIBLE.
    I cant belieive that Damrau allowed herself to be humiliaited by a director on an ego trip. It had nothing to do with the treatment of women by men years ago but everything to do with womens treatment of each other these days.
    Anyone women losing blood like that would immediately have rushed to put on a new frock.

    Fantastic performance all round. Congratulations. Split stage might be a slight distraction at a live performance but at a cinema relay it works very well. Some of the stage settings were simply magnificant reminiscent of a Caravaggio painting.

    Did they turn the tap off for cinema audiences and did the cameras stick to the side of the staqe the opera was being performed in or did they show the pantomine frolics on the other side of the stage as well?

    Donizzetti must be turning in his grave! Singing great production ridiculous. Audience laughing out loud as Lucia and Edgardo tried to remove their trousers while singing a love duet! Lucia singing the last act clasping her stomach throughout. A smaller audience for the second half after a number of interval walkouts.

    It was a most wonderful performance. We watched in Leighton Buzzard Library Theatre - marvellous. We would have loved to sit thru it again. Will there be a DVD?

    Its detractors are missing the essence. This production confronts what passion and primal instincts can do. There is nothing gratuitous in the violence or sex: everything serves the music. Quibbling about incidental points of historical authenticity misses the point. Everything in the interpretation served the music itself.The timing of certain notes to coincide with peaks of emotional or physical pain was just one of a myriad of examples of interpretative genius.The ghost of Callas must be smiling - she would be leading the ovation for Mitchell, Damrau and Castronovo.

    Went to see the production last night in Exmouth UK. Was rather dubious that the atmosphere of the ROH could be re created in a small Provincial cinema but I should not have worried. The production was outstanding and Damrau was incredible; if Oscars could be given for operatic performances she would deserve one.
    I have seen Lucia before by amateurs and on video with Dame Joan, but this was in a different league and has certainly piqued my desire to visit these cinema broadcasts again.

    We went to watch the live transmission at our local cinema (Longwell Green Bristol) and it was a wonderful dramatic performance. Unfortunately the transmission failed during the last scene and we missed the end. I have never seen this opera and my friend last saw it about 30 years ago

    I went along to this thinking I might have to listen with my eyes closed. It was much better than that. The production was at times distracting, but it is not an easy opera to stage in an interesting way, and it didn't matter because the musical performances were superb, Castronovo in particular, and not forgetting the orchestra. But why does the poor old cinema audience have to be subjected to relentlessly patronising introductions by a ghastly presenter who seems to know nothing about music. Could we not lose that and just have the opera? Please.

I didn't bother going to the opera screening having seen this travesty of an operatic production at the ROH last week, it was the worst production I have seen there in 40 years, and believe me I have seen a few disasters there in my time.

    Opera in your local cinema is a wonderful advance.
    The ROH Lucia is exceptional and the cast were of the highest standard, especially Charles Castronovo.
    Pity the split set created times when gorgeous complex arias were packed in to half the stage whilst very little went on in the other half.
    The sound quality in cinemas was different and inferior to the recent ROH Boris Gudonov. The microphones seemed to be at the back of the auditorium whereas for Boris they were close to the performers.

    After reading such negative reviews, I approached last night’s live cinema screening of “Lucia di Lammermoor” with trepidation. I expected to hate it, but I absolutely loved it!

    Yes, it was challenging and, yes, it made my blood run cold once or twice. However, I think entertainment should sometimes push the boundaries – as long as it is done with consideration and care.

    The split staging worked brilliantly and gave the audience a back story that would otherwise have been missing. Diana Damrau was fantastic in the title role and she performed her "mad scene" with such sensitivity and intelligence. Additionally, her supporting cast was spectacular. My only concern was for the poor Assistant Stage Manager tasked with mopping up the carnage at the end of the performance.

    The highlight of the evening was the incredible Charles Castronovo. What a voice and what a reaction from the ROH audience. I can only speak as a cinema-going opera bunny, but I think he managed to redraw the battle lines in the fight to be crowned "Current Top Tenor (Runner-up)”. Messrs Alagna, Calleja et al may well be glancing over their shoulders because he was fabulous.

    I was also really impressed with the comments made by the Director of Opera, Kasper Holten. His enthusiasm for the 2016/17 season and for event cinema was infectious. He seemed to be such a nice man and a very safe pair of hands in which to place ROH Opera.

    Thank you, as always, to the fabulous ROH team and to the very talented camera operators and sound engineers who made this such a pleasure to watch.

    Now on countdown to “Otello” in June 2017 – can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!

    Having read the mocking, moronic, “writing-in-your-sleep” journalism that greets anything new in the opera house I was not expecting to like this, but I was wrong. It was a fine and very impressive reimagining of Lucia di Lammermoor. Of course it didn’t work throughout. There is no way a girl who falls instantly for the old forged letter trick can be presented as anything but a standard operatic feather-brained ninny, and even Diana Damrau’s interpretation faltered at that point. But otherwise it did work and congratulations to Director, Designer and above all to a superb cast. The inwardness and credibility of Damrau’s mad scene will stay with me for a long time. Tézier and Castronovo were also top-class – and a special thankyou to Rachel Lloyd for a beautifully sung and presented Alisa. It’s not the only way I want to see this work but it was a memorable experience.

    Of those – there are always some – who want opera in the original period, I would ask, which original period do you have in mind? Enrico’s reference to “William is dead, Mary will be crowned Queen” suggests a grasp of British history abysmal even by the low standards of Italian opera. Given a libretto with such a shaky historical focus, a Director is surely entitled to make such sense of it as s/he can.

    Wow! Yesterday’s cinema live transmission was truly gripping, thrilling and intense! A whole new concept of Lucia that worked perfectly for me! Performed by a formidable cast it added unexpected complexitity to the characters. Such performances are why I stick to opera and keep coming back over and over again. Thank you!! Looking forward to Werther and the new season...

    We were fortunate to have seen the performance live at ROH on the 16th April and again in the cinema. What we gained from the screening was the benefit of the close up shots, and confirmed to us what a great actress Diana Damrau is.There were many nuances that we did not pick up in the live performance.

    As a long standing traditionalist of opera productions (I hated Guillame Tell) and reading some of the adverse comments I had great misgivings to see Lucia this time. However the performance of the cinema broadcast was very satisfying. Although not greatly in accordance with either Walter Scott or the original libretto of Cammarano Ms Mitchell put a lot of thought into the productin. Very commendable! I was not greatly impressed by the too extensive use of the bathroom, the substitution of the grand hall of the baronial castle with a billiard table or the too frequent disturbing appearances of the ghosts but within the framework it was acceptable. The production all in all did not deserve the hype or the fuss.
    Lucia is a bel canto opera and the current cast certainly justified it. Damrau is not Sutherland (but who is?) she is a formidable actress and sings all the notes extremely well. Convincing characterisation musically and theatrically.
    Castronovo was a great and very pleasant surprise,sang beautifully and with great conviction,Tezier is as good as he always is. The orchestra played well under Oren's leaden conducting. All in all I enjoyed it, albeit it was more thanks to Donizetti than the actual presentation particularly one week after the superlative "Roberto Devereux" from the Met.

    Like Catherine Lyddon we also attended the Vue at Longwell Green Bristol. Despite enjoying the performance immensely, especially the wonderful performance from Diana, we were left completely deflated by the loss of most of the last scene in Act III. We were eagerly awaiting to see how the production was to handle the climax.
    Is there any possibility of you providing a stream of this last scene on the ROH website?

      I'm very sorry that you missed the end of the relay. We're waiting on a report at the moment from Vue head office with an explanation as to what happened.     Just back from seeing most of the Encore showing of Lucia at Derby Cinema de Lux. Apart from the lack of cast list/synopsis sheets, and loss of picture and then sound at the end, it was a fine performance.

  59. This opera was absolutely wonderful, Fabulous singing and acting especially from Diana Damrau and Charles Castronovo. Excellent direction from Katie Mitchell. Saw this in the Odeon Sheffield - the Encore Sunday afternoon -- sadly only 5 people in the audience. When will this be out on DVD please?

    What a wonderful performance and what superb and realistic direction of this tragic masterpiece. Diana Damrau was magnificent both in her voice and acting, this must be the modern definitive Lucia surely. Charles Castronovo was excellent and the perfect foil for the tragic heroine, Ludovic Tezier perhaps a little less convincing by comparison. I have seen and heard a lot of the opera repertoire and this staging and performance stands out. Bravo, Diana Damrau, Bravo Katie Mitchell.

    Saw the film production yesterday and am still angry. K Mitchell should be banned for life so she cannot inflict other disasters on the world. Shame on the ROH management for allowing this nonsense to go ahead. Poor Donizetti, so happy he is not here to witness such a disaster.

    A rather late contribution from Sydney (Australia): a brilliant production - confronting, certainly, but dramatically perfectly legitimate; Donizetti's glorious music delivered by brilliant singers and actors, not to mention a fine performance by the resident orchestra. But ultimately, for me at least, this is a horrible opera. No, I don't expect a happy ending, but the story is grossly over-wrought even by Scott's hyper-romantic standards. Glad I was able to see this filmed version, but I won't go out of my way to see Lucia again.

    Loved it! I know that many others did not like it, but that's their problem and not ROH's or Katie's. There are plenty of G rated productions for them; it was childish of them to disapprove and boo; right? they are the civilized, composed people that do not lower themselves to the level of us, the brutes that are ok with realistic art, death, blood, murder, menstruation, miscarriage... I could go on and on... Good job! Don't let them intimidate you.

      To my mind, it's not childish to disapprove of the desecration of great art. Lucia is work of genius, who does Katie Mitchell think she to believe she can improve it with these modern-day innovations like split screens. Her work is subway wall graffiti scribbled on the masterworks of the greatest achievements of mankind.

    I've gone to the opera at least once per year since hearing Renata Tebaldi sing Tosca at the OLD Met. It breaks my heart to see modern productions pandering to the crude sensibilities of the younger generation.

    How dare Katie Mitchell think she can add to the artistic achievements of Maestro Donizetti, a consummate genius, as evidenced by the Act II sextet, perhaps one of the greatest ensembles ever written.

    Katie must have believed adding sex and violence, modern innovations like split screens, copious blood and of course a video game mentality would improve this immortal and sacred work of art.
