The composer would have LOATHED this production!

Lavish is the best description of this wonderful production. The 1953 village hall staging was a revelation. But did I spot a zip in one of the dresses?
It was a wonderful live moment when the queen caught her dress in Essex's shoe. But the actors handled it very well.

Richard Jones's production was a disaster. The universal theme of power and vulnerability so poignantly displayed in Opera North's production (directed by Phillida Lloyd) some years ago was submerged in this idea of holding it in a village hall. It made the opera seem provincial and was an insult to the composer. It stands as one of the great operas. ROH showed the world it didn't really appreciate it or understand it. A pretentious production and patronising to Britten. What a bitter disappointment and a shame. An opportunity lost.
