Kenneth MacMillan's dark and majestic Mayerling is one of the choreographer's masterpieces, with grimly intense pas de deux, intoxicating crowd scenes and a taste of the opulent splendour of the Austro-Hungarian empire set to a decadent score by Franz Lizst.
The ballet is based on the true story of the downfall of Crown Prince Rudolf and its cast includes key figures of the Austro-Hungarian Royal Family, as well as friends, lovers and servants. To help unravel the at times complicated relationships between the characters, we've created a family tree in partnership with The Ballet Bag:
