On 4 March, Will Self, the novelist, journalist and Professor of Contemporary Thought at Brunel University, presented a lecture discussing the themes of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Self states that, ‘in the past operas provoked riots – I want my lecture about an opera to provoke one.’

Update - Watch the stream on demand:

Director, John Fulljames, opened the event by giving a brief introduction to his production of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.

The Insights event also featured a performance from internationally acclaimed soprano Angel Blue who recently played Mimì in ENO’s autumn 2014 season. Blue sang works including Mahagonny’s now iconic ‘Alabama Song’, a piece that has been sung by many non-operatic artists including David Bowie and The Doors.

Will at his most culturally estute and insightful.

I watched this because I am doing a very stimulating course on Brecht's early plays, but this was a trial - I would dread being stuck in the corner at a busy party with a bore like Self. Given the less elevated circles I move in, it won't happen.
Looking forward to the live stream of Mahagonny on April 1st.
