World renowned mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato recently offered tips for up-and-coming singers as part of a ROH Insights event in conjunction with the National Opera Studio. The event is now available to watch in full on-demand.

The session saw her coach three young singers, offering practical advice and unique insights into the vocal technique required in works by Mozart, Purcell and Rossini.

'What I love to do is to come back to that idea of play and risk', says Joyce of her free and informal approach to such coaching sessions, where she advocates a 'safe space' approach. 'Sometimes to end up where we want to be at a high level of proficiency and expressive potential as an artist, we have to go outside the boundaries and go further than would be the final result, to try different things, see where we are and what that feels like'.

In the years since her 2003 debut, Joyce has become an audience favourite at Covent Garden. Later this Season she returns to for a main stage recital with Antonio Pappano, the Music Director of The Royal Opera.
