Talking of the piece as ‘an Everest’, Maestro Pappano looked at the nuances of the score, from the tempestuous opening scene in which Otello returns home in a raging storm. Maestro Pappano moved on to talk about the music that accompanies the introduction of the various characters, including Desdemona. Extracts of the score were sung by soprano Alexandra Deshorties.

This ROH Insights session is one of a number available to watch on our YouTube channel and will soon be available to download via iTunes U.

Otello runs from 12 - 24 July.
