The Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus got the chance to sing with the Royal Opera Chorus for two joint concerts this autumn.

The new National Skills Academy in Purfleet saw the first of the two ‘Awake in Chorus!’ performances, while the second took place in the Paul Hamlyn Hall at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

The ROH Thurrock Community Chorus is open to all Thurrock residents , whatever their experience of singing. It The Chorus meets twice a week, and had been rehearsing for this event throughout 2012.  “This concert is the result of all the hard work we’ve put in – and the fact that we’re singing with the Royal Opera Chorus makes it even more special,” said choir member, Sylvia Outram.

The two choruses performed songs together and as separate choirs. The repertoire included well-loved operatic numbers by Verdi, Bizet, Rossini, and Sullivan; as well as a specially-commissioned piece by Purfleet-based composer Alexander Campkin. The new commission was performed jointly by the two choruses. Librettist Hazel Gould created the text in collaboration with members of the ROH Thurrock Community Chorus, and the commission was performed jointly by the two choruses.

The ROH Thurrock Community Chorus will be performing in a special Christmas Concert at Thurrock on 8 December. The event is sold out.
