This is the 10th year of West End LIVE, a weekend of free entertainment organized by Westminster City Council and the Society of London Theatre to celebrate the quality and range of shows in the West End.

West End LIVE takes place on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June, and The Royal Opera Chorus will appear at the end of Saturday’s bill, following numbers performed by the casts of Matilda The Musical, Disney’s The Lion King, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and many others. We’re delighted that one of opera’s greatest stars, Plácido Domingo, will be able to join us to lead the chorus ahead of conducting a performance of Tosca at the ROH that very evening.

Some may be surprised to hear opera performed in the same context as musical theatre, but we feel very much a part of the same landscape as our colleagues and neighbours in London’s West End. What is opera, after all, but a high-octane mix of music and theatre? It’s not an art form that should be kept apart in the opera house – we want it to be part of an many people’s musical experience as possible. Hopefully by sharing opera with those who may not have seen it live before, the beauty and power of the experience may lead them to explore more. On Tuesday 15 July Trafalgar Square will be one of many locations around the UK where people can enjoy our free live relay of La bohème, the second of this summer’s BP Big Screens. We’d love if some of the audience for this weekend’s event come back for Bohème.

In ballet as well as opera we are working with the West End (and beyond) to reach new audiences. This Christmas Will Tuckett’s magical dance theatre adaptation of The Wind in the Willows transfers to the Vaudeville Theatre, while we welcome ZooNation (also appearing at Saturday’s West End LIVE) to the Royal Opera House to perform a new family show, The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

We’re delighted to be part of West End LIVE. Why not come and join us – it should be an amazing show!

West End LIVE 2014 is in association with Mastercard. Please check the West End Live website for full schedule details and event information.
