The Royal Ballet and Marks & Spencer launch ballet clothing range

New clothing range for girls aged 3 to 8 launched in time for Christmas.

Marks & Spencer has launched a new collection of ballet clothing, created in association with The Royal Ballet.

The range, designed for girls aged three to eight years, is available to buy online via Marks and Spencer’s website.

‘The collection is beautifully detailed,’ says Alison Csom at Marks & Spencer. ‘It is ideal for Christmas – it’s a young ballet dancer’s dream!’

The collection includes an embroidered tutu dress, a pleated tulle skirt decorated with sequins, satin and diamante and a classic wrap-cardigan, as well as two styled t-shirt tops featuring designs inspired by The Royal Ballet.

Marks and Spencer are offering the chance to win clothing from the range as well as two tickets to see The Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker. To enter the draw, you must re-tweet a tweet posted by Marks &Spencer on 26 November at 9am that relates to the Royal Ballet collection and Prize Draw.     It's rather depressing, if not at all surprising, that ballet-related ranges by big brands like this perpetuate the myth that ballet is (a) all pink and white, and (b) just for girls...

      and why, in the ROH shop, is so much of the merchandise that is aimed at ballet lovers also pink and sparkly?

      I agree - why must ballet be depicted in this sugar plum fairy way? There's enough pink tat out there for little girls already. Please can we all grow up? I find this flogging of tulle by M&S in conjunction with the Royal rather cynical and exploitative. Wish you hadn't gone there......

    I am not alone in being annoyed and angered by the horrid collection that just perpetuates the idea that ballet is a soft frilly pink think just for little girls. Where are the boys clothes? Where are the clothes in nice bright non pastel colours ? The Royal Ballet and the ROH cannot complain about the general publics misconception of ballet if they continue to attempt to capitalise on cliches that do neither genders nor ballet any good. Deeply disappointed

      As with all of our product lines, we undertake market research prior to them going on sale. Unfortunately, research has suggested that a line of ballet clothing for boys wouldn't be economically viable.

      As we have a responsibility to support the work of the Royal Opera House by raising money through commercial operations we need to take a realistic view of how we can best do this.

      We'd like to hear what sort of ballet clothes boys would like to wear as any feedback is useful for us in developing future product lines.

  3. I think little girls just love clothes like this - I would of loved them as a child! Let children be children - not disappointed! ;-)

    I agree that pink and sparkly is so stereotyped and outdated, but if you're going to do tradition then boys could be inspired with Nutcracker soldiers/Prince/Mad Hatter themed wear. My 12 year old son is at the Royal Ballet School and would have loved such items when he was younger. Ballet is such a demanding vocation so cool captions would also be the way to go. Eg. 'If Ballet was easier it would be called Football.' Unisex items would not leave out the boys if you're worried about sales.
